excess of pre-war. There is now need for quarters not only for expatriate staff, but for senior local staff. Government and many local firms and banks have approached the problem realistically in the inception of large building schemes.
The Council has approved the building of 18 staff flats, and sketch plans are being prepared.
These will be adequate for additional staff to be appointed in fulfilment of our existing increased teaching commitments.
It is recommended that provision be made for a further 18-20 flats, to accommodate staff to be appointed under the present development recommendations of the Boards of Faculties.
Assistance will be required for the financing of these 36-38 flats, roughly as under:-

PROPOSED WOMEN'S HOSTEL
At the occupation of the new Women's Hostel, a Warden, Assistant Warden and staff will be needed, and after the first three years a Maintenance Allocation. No assistance is asked for this, as the expenditure will be borne by the normal working of Hostels Account.
5. STUDENT ACCOMMODATICN - GENERAL
When present extension schemes are working the additional space in the three University Hostels, the completion of Ho Tung Hall, and the building of new St. John's and St. Stephen's Halls, it is estimated that we shall be able to accommodate about 540 men students, and 160 women, in all Hostels. Assuming that about 30% of our total student strength will be women, and that we shall by 1952/3 have reached the 850 total mark, and also that some 10% of students will be exempt from residence, we find that we should have ample space for the men (not allowing for further expansion, nor providing for visiting research students or postgraduate scholars), but not for the women.
It is recommended that by 1951/2 plans be made for necessary additions to the Ho Tung Hall, which will then accommodate a further 35-40.
6. DINING HALL
The Council has approved in principle the erection of a Students' Dining Hall.
This scheme has as its main purpose the introduction of dining similar to that of other British residential Universities and as subsidiary purposes the centralization of feeding arrangements to ensure high quality of meals at minimal expense, and the release of further space for living accommodation for students.
